In September Lynn had an exhibit table at the NZ Resource Teachers of Learning Behaviour (RTLB) Conference 2009 in Nelson.
She showcased the programmes to many teachers and the response was great. Some of the comments were: "There is nothing like this out there", “I will be taking this back to our cluster", and “I will find these programmes really useful".
The conference was a great success with many well known speakers sharing their perspectives on education.
Lynn presented the programmes at the New Zealand Association of Counsellor’s (NZAC) conference in Hamilton in September 2009, the session was filled to capacity and the response from the delegates present, was very positive.
There was interest in the future possibilities for the programmes to be used with counselling clients.
At our request, The Honourable Tariana Turia visited us on 3rd September 2009 to look at the programmes our company Degrees of Emotion Ltd has developed. The visit was most successful, with the Minister’s comments about the programmes being:
"I have not seen anything like this before" and, "I can see they have great potential".
We were delighted with her response, and plan to follow up her advice, which was to contact several key people, who would, very likely, be interested in viewing the programmes.
Lynn Bryant and Megan Adams, the directors of Degrees of Emotion presented the updated software prototype at the ATANZ (Assistive Technology Alliance of New Zealand) conference during early July.
The product was well received by speech therapists, occupational therapists and special needs educators alike. In paticular, those who attended the the conference remarked that the products would have significant impact on many of their clients for whom language aquisition and emotional literacy are an ongoing challenge.
The competition to win a copy of the product was won by Mike Carter, Special Education Advisor / Assistive Technology Coordinator, Whangarei NZ. We’ll look forward to hearing about Mike’s experiences with using Degrees of Emotion in real world situations.
The sofware applications ’Degrees of Emotion’ and ’Storyboard’ are now only weeks away, after a year in development.
For more information, or to be advised when the product is commercially available, please use the ’Contact Us’ page to register your interest.
Lynn Bryant, an experienced occupational therapist and trained counsellor has developed a wide understanding of the challenges faced by individuals who have experienced emotional difficulties when dealing with issues of either a physical or psychological nature.
The programme Degrees of Emotion was initially designed to provide a solution to the problem encountered when working with severely disabled young people. There was no appropriate way for them to articulate exactly how they felt, despite using an augmentative communication device.
At that time Lynn was completing a Masters Degree in counselling, so the tool was further developed as the foundation for her dissertation.
In an effort to progress the project, the tool was entered in the University of Auckland’s SPARC 40K entrepreneurial challenge 2004, the programme was selected as one of the ten finalists from over 60 teams with diverse inventions.
This recognition by the business fraternity was the impetus needed to start the process of making the programme commercially available.
